How to protect your children…

  • Learn how to use the computer and access the Internet.
  • Find out about your children’s online habits.
  • Talk to your children about the possible dangers online.
  • Keep the home computer in a high-traffic area of the house.
  • Install filtering software, or use an Internet provider that includes filters in its service.
  • Regularly check your children’s e-mail messages.
  • Regularly check your children’s Favorite Places and Browser History (which lists sites recently visited).
  • Talk to the parents of your children’s friends about Internet control.
  • Learn how your children use the Internet at school and what safeguards are in place in the classroom, the library, and the computer lab.

What to tell your children…

  • Never arrange a meeting with someone you have “met” online.
  • Never give out personal information on the Internet or in a user profile.
  • Never download pictures sent from an unknown person or source.
  • Never upload pictures of yourself to an unknown person or site.
  • Remember that people you “meet” online may not be who they claim to be.
