- Learn how to use the computer and access the Internet.
- Find out about your children’s online habits.
- Talk to your children about the possible dangers online.
- Keep the home computer in a high-traffic area of the house.
- Install filtering software, or use an Internet provider that includes filters in its service.
- Regularly check your children’s e-mail messages.
- Regularly check your children’s Favorite Places and Browser History (which lists sites recently visited).
- Talk to the parents of your children’s friends about Internet control.
- Learn how your children use the Internet at school and what safeguards are in place in the classroom, the library, and the computer lab.
What to tell your children…
- Never arrange a meeting with someone you have “met” online.
- Never give out personal information on the Internet or in a user profile.
- Never download pictures sent from an unknown person or source.
- Never upload pictures of yourself to an unknown person or site.
- Remember that people you “meet” online may not be who they claim to be.
