The Prince William County Police Department will be targeting red-light running and promoting safe driving habits during national Stop on Red Week August 4-10th.

Sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, national Stop on Red Week seeks to educate drivers about the dangers of red-light running as well as reduce the number and severity of traffic crashes. Prince William County Police, in partnership with the National Coalition for Safer Roads, is promoting this safety campaign.

In Virginia, red-light violations carry four demerit points on your driver’s license. You may be subject to a fine of up to $350 as well (Code of Virginia 46.2-833).

Red-light running causes countless injuries and fatalities every year, with a large number of those deaths and injuries being innocent pedestrians, cyclists and passengers in vehicles hit by red-light runners.
